what exactly is a tennis bracelet?

Screen Shot 2019-07-10 at 17.00.51Dig out your old rackets, Wimbledon is here! As The Championships, the oldest tennis tournament in the world unfolds for 2019, we are reminded of Chris Evert and her undeniable style, which then brings us onto the iconic moment during which the now very popular tennis bracelets were born.

Why are they called 'tennis bracelets'?

Tennis bracelets can be a real statement to your jewellery, with their unique yet timeless design. Interestingly, they have actually not always been referred to as 'tennis' bracelets, which leads us back to Chris Evert.

Screen Shot 2019-07-10 at 16.59.51The term actually sparked in 1978 during the US Open tennis tournament, when professional tennis player Chris Evert lost her bracelet mid-game when the clasp of the bracelet snapped. She asked for the game to pause temporarily while she searched and retrieved it and when the game continued she won the tournament for the 4th time.

Therefore since that day, the style of the bracelet that she was wearing started being referred to as the 'tennis bracelet' and this is how the name was adopted. Today, it is one of the most popular styles of bracelet of all time due to it's classic and timeless design.

What is the 'tennis bracelet' style?

For those who are wondering what the main characteristics of the tennis bracelet are, the main features include a continuous line of uniform and symmetrical diamonds, and these are usually claw set.

However, a lot of modern spins have been created since the rising of the 'tennis' bracelet, meaning that there are actually many variations to a tennis bracelet today. Some of these include having more than one row of diamonds, or even swapping the diamonds for any other gemstone, such as cubic zirconia, amethyst, tanzanite, the list is endless!

Screen Shot 2019-07-10 at 17.02.00In terms of the setting of the bracelet, some modern twists include a rub-over set, and claw set with a diamond or gemstone halo surrounding each stone. Some more daring and out-of-the-box changes to the tennis bracelet also include bracelets that are more patterned and slightly more complicated in terms of design.

Not all jewellers agree with this style of bracelet being referred to as a tennis bracelet, but as long as the stones are continuous and generally uniform, it can be open to interpretation!
