Diamonds are beautiful sought after stones due to their scintillation and beauty. Although diamonds have become a popular gemstone for engagement rings in recent times, other pieces of jewellery with these amazing stones are equally as precious.

Diamonds don't have to just be for weddings, why not gift them for a special birthday?

what does a diamond birthstone symbolise?

Traditionally, birthstones are part of a lot of cultures. They are thought to be healing, and help the wearer in various ways.

If you are born in the month of April, all of the perks stated above should be reason enough to add a few diamond pieces into your collection.

what makes a diamond so special?

As diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones, they are very versatile in jewellery making. They can be cut in various shapes and sizes, and set in almost any metal.

They are made up of the element carbon, and mined in a lot of places around the world such as South Africa, Russia, Brazil, India, and Australia. Canadian and American diamonds have also been quite popular over recent years, with the market for them growing in demand.

Historically, diamonds first became a popular gemstone in India, although they have been traded as early as 4BC. In India, the Moguls and Imperial Colony mined them along the three major rivers and they soon became a symbol of status.

We still see diamonds in the jewellery of many celebrities and royals around the globe, as its representation of wealth and prosperity has continued to the modern day.

What determines a good quality diamond?

You may already know that diamonds come in different colours, that can range from faint to vivid. The vividness in the colour is correlated with the value of coloured diamonds.

The colours diamonds can be found in are yellow, red, pink, blue and black. Due to the demand for these beautiful colours, some are treated in a laboratory to give them the colour desired, called heat treated diamonds.

Diamonds are valued based on their 4C’s in the jewellery business:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat

Let's have a quick look at what all these different terms mean. For a more in depth explanation, please take a look at our blog post here.

Cut

Most jewellers will tell you that the cut of the diamond is the most important aspect of the stone, as this will determine the sparkle and fire.

If cut correctly, the light can enter through the table of the diamond, reflect on the facets back up through the table, and give it a special scintillation.

Colour

The second most important C is colour. Diamonds are graded from D-Z, with D being the best colour you can find. D, E, and F are near colourless, and are usually the whitest diamonds visually.

Anything below a colour I-J, will have a yellowish tint which are not so desirable. It is important to note that these lower grade diamonds are not the same as a yellow diamond.

Clarity

Coming in third is clarity, and it references the imperfections found within the diamond. These imperfections could be cloudy, black, or spots in the inside structure of the diamond, and there is no way to rid the diamond of them. A flawless diamond means it is a stone with no known imperfections.

Sometimes, skilled craftsmen could cut the diamond in a way to hide the imperfection within the facets and therefore make it less visible to the naked eye.

Carat

This refers to the unit of mass equal to about 200mg, and is used in measuring gemstones. It originates from the word 'carob seeds', which is what was used to weigh gemstones many years ago.

The bigger the diamond is, the more valuable and desired it is. The current biggest diamond found in the world is known as the Star of Africa. It is cut from the Cullinan Diamond which is a 3,106.75 carat stone and estimated more than two billion US dollars.
